Sweet Corn Variety and Pest Management Trial

چکیده
Introduction Organic sweet corn can be successfully grown in Iowa, based on our agricultural resources and our extensive experience with field corn production. With the continuing growth of organic consumers in the U.S., premium prices can be obtained for organic sweet corn from Iowa. With the potential for major markets across the U.S. identified, research on production, harvesting and processing protocols is needed to meet this demand. One of the key pests in organic sweet corn production is the corn earworm. Earworm control was improved through the addition of a certified organic spreader-sticker in preliminary tests in 2001. This project investigated variety selection for early markets and the efficacy of the naturally occurring soil bacterium, Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis), for improved pest management of the corn earworm at the Neely-Kinyon Farm.

Field and Forage Crops Biology, Ecology, and Evolving Management of Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in Sweet Corn in the United States
The corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), is a polyphagous pest found throughout the United States, where it attacks many field and vegetable crops. Although H. zea has long been a traditional pest of sweet corn, its importance to this crop has increased dramatically over the past two decades. In this review, we summarize information critical for current and future management of H. zea in swe...

As growers switch to transgenic crops and selective insecticides that are less toxic to natural enemies, natural enemies can become more important in agricultural pest management. Current decision-making guides are generally based on pest abundance and do not address pest and natural enemy toxicity differences among insecticides or the impact of natural enemies on pest survival. A refined appro...
متن کاملEffects of Timing and Insecticide on Management of Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in Sweet Corn (Poales: Poaceae)
Helicoverpa zea Boddie (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), the corn earworm, is a key pest of sweet corn (Poales: Poaceae) in many parts of the United States. Integrated pest management (IPM) practices for H. zea in fresh and processing sweet corn use pheromone trap counts of male moths for management decisions. In this study, we examined whether sweet corn could be protected more effectively if insectic...
متن کاملBt sweet corn and selective insecticides: impacts on pests and predators.
Sweet corn, Zea mays L., is attacked by a variety of insect pests that can cause severe losses to the producer. Current control practices are largely limited to the application of broad-spectrum insecticides that can have a substantial and deleterious impact on the natural enemy complex. Predators have been shown to provide partial control of sweet corn pests when not killed by broad-spectrum i...
متن کاملMulti-state trials of Bt sweet corn varieties for control of the corn earworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).
Field tests in 2010-2011 were performed in New York, Minnesota, Maryland, Ohio, and Georgia to compare Bt sweet corn lines expressing Cry1A.105 + Cry2Ab2 and Cry1Ab with their non-Bt isolines, with and without the use of foliar insecticides. The primary insect pest in all locations during the trial years was Heliocoverpa zea (Boddie), which is becoming the most serious insect pest of sweet corn...
